Are Hello Bello Diapers Actually Non-toxic?

When you’re a new mom, diapers suddenly become one of the most important things in your household. And let’s be real: you’re not just dealing with a few diaper changes here and there—you’re tackling hundreds (if not thousands) in your baby’s first year. That’s why so many parents (including me) are asking: Are Hello Bello diapers actually non-toxic?

Founded by celebrity parents Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard, Hello Bello has made waves in the baby product world with promises of affordable, plant-based, eco-friendly diapers. Their mission? To make premium products available to all families at a lower price point—and their diapers have quickly become one of the most talked-about baby products on the market. But if you’re a parent who’s been researching non-toxic diaper brands, you might be wondering if Hello Bello diapers are truly free from toxic chemicals, or if they are just another version of conventional diapers dressed up in cute prints and clever marketing?

Let’s dig in, mama.

Why Non-Toxic Diapers Matter

Before diving into Hello Bello specifically, let’s zoom out and talk about why non-toxic disposable diapers are such a hot topic.

Traditional diapers often contain harmful chemicals like chlorine-processed wood pulp, artificial fragrance, petroleum-based ingredients, and even trace amounts of heavy metals from dyes or absorbent gels. When I discovered this while pregnant with my first daughter, I was horrified. I spent many nights SO deep in rabbit holes trying to find a healthier alternative (that was still disposable). Since diapers sit right against baby’s skin basically 24/7, exposure to these substances can lead to diaper rash, allergic reactions, or even long-term endocrine disruption.

The good news? More eco-friendly diapers and safer diaper options are on the rise, and there seem to be handfuls on the market to choose from now. Brands are beginning to use plant-based materials, organic cotton, and plant-derived core liners instead of synthetic-only layers. They’re also adopting chlorine-free processing methods (like TCF diapers, meaning Totally Chlorine Free).

In other words, parents are finally getting better choices for baby’s diaper—and Hello Bello is one of the brands leading the charge.

Hello Bello’s Big Promise

So, what exactly do Hello Bello diapers claim to offer?

  • Plant-based materials: The diapers use a plant-derived core liner with sustainably harvested fluff pulp.

  • Chlorine-free processing: They’re made without elemental chlorine, so you won’t find chlorine dioxidebleaching agents.

  • No artificial fragrances or lotions: A big plus for babies with sensitive skin (all babies, really).

  • Cute prints: From adorable animals to seasonal designs, Hello Bello wins on aesthetics. My personal preference, however, would be the all white option, because I prefer no inks.

  • Affordable price point: Compared to some high-end diaper brands, Hello Bello offers similar perks at a lower price.

  • Subscription bundle option: Families can grab a diaper bundle directly from the Hello Bello website, with free shipping and add ons like wipes or diaper creams.

On paper, Hello Bello sounds like the perfect balance of premium products at a price families can actually manage. But how does Hello Bello really stack up against the most non-toxic diapers on the market?

What’s Inside Hello Bello Diapers?

Here’s a peek at their manufacturing process and what goes into each diaper:

  • Wood pulp & chlorine free fluff pulp: Used for absorbency, sourced sustainably.

  • Plant-based liner: Softer against baby’s skin than pure plastic.

  • SAP (super absorbent polymer): A common feature in all disposable diapers, including eco-friendly diapers, to lock in wetness.

  • Polypropylene & polyethylene: Synthetic materials used in the outer layers for leak protection.

  • No lotions, no phthalates, no parabens, no fragrances, no chlorine processing, no soy products, no gluten

This combination makes Hello Bello a much better choice than mainstream diapers like Huggies or Pampers Pure, but they’re not fully free of synthetic materials, and the layer touching baby's skin is not organic cotton, which is my preference. They also use a wetness indicator, which I also prefer to forego—it is so easy to tell if a diaper is soiled or not just by touching it, so I think the extra chemicals that make up wetness indicators are unnecessary.

Honest Review: My Opinion on Hello Bello

Here’s my honest opinion—mom to mom.

I was gifted a pack of Hello Bello diapers after I had my first daughter, and I thought they worked just fine! They were absorbent and soft, but I was not blown away by any specific feature. I chose not to purchase any additional Hello Bello diapers due to the fact that they aren't TCF (totally chlorine free), don't utilize an organic cotton top layer, don't have any specific non-toxic certifications (like EWG verified or OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100) and use a wetness indicator.

So in short, would I call them the best non-toxic disposable diaper? No, not necessarily—but they’re a solid, accessible option for families looking to avoid some toxic chemicals without breaking the bank. They are budget-friendly and a better option than many mainstream diapers. At the end of the day, the best disposable diapers are the ones that fit your baby, your budget, and your lifestyle.

Pros & Cons of Hello Bello Diapers

Pros:

  • Affordable compared to other non-toxic diaper brands

  • Free from artificial fragrance, lotion, phthalates, and chlorine processing (ECF)

  • Subscription diaper bundle saves time and money

  • Made in the USA

Cons:

  • Still contains synthetic materials and petroleum-based ingredients

  • Not biodegradable—so still an environmental issue

  • They are ECF, not TCF (totally chlorine free)

  • Wetness indicators contain chemicals

The Diapers I Chose Instead...

Healthybaby Diapers

When it came time to choose diapers for my little one, I found myself endlessly scrolling through reviews, blogs, and Instagram posts—trying to balance safety, style, and price. That’s when I discovered Healthybaby diapers, and the more I learned, the more it felt like the best choice for my baby’s health long-term. I used Healthybaby diapers exclusively once I discovered them all the way through potty training my toddler, and am now using them again with my 4-month-old. I don't think I'd ever choose a different brand over Healthybaby—that's how good these diapers are!

Unmatched Safety Being the First EWG VERIFIED® Diaper

Healthybaby isn’t just lightly eco-conscious—they’re the first and only EWG VERIFIED™ diaper brand out there. That means they’ve passed an incredibly strict third-party check that ensures no harmful, irritating, or endocrine-disrupting chemicals touch your baby’s skin. Unlike Hello Bello—whose ingredient list is generous but not independently verified—Healthybaby’s transparency gives me real peace of mind knowing what’s inside each diaper. No volatile organic compounds, fragrances, parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde, optical brighteners—literally thousands of “bad stuff” are off the table. And it just keeps getting better. The layer touching baby is made from GOTS certified organic cotton and NO wetness indicators are used. It's like this company read my mind and fixed every problem I had with the other "non-toxic" disposable diaper brands on the market.

Plant-Based Focus with Thoughtful Materials

Hello Bello leans on plant-derived cores and avoids chlorine-processing, which is nice. But Healthybaby takes it even further. Their diapers are made with roughly 35% plant-based materials, and their fluff pulp is Totally Chlorine Free (TCF) and FSC-certified. Plus, they’ve added organic cotton into the outer cover for softness that feels luxurious—they are the softest diapers I have ever felt. And they’re Plastic Neutral Certified—meaning they offset their plastic footprint through environmental partnerships.

Eco-Forward Manufacturing You Can Feel Good About

Healthybaby diapers are produced in a carbon-neutral facility powered by green energy—a clear commitment to protecting the planet. Healthybaby goes a step further by packaging with sustainably sourced paper, not plastic wrapping, and offering full ingredient disclosure on every pack so you know exactly what’s included—and knowing exactly what's in my baby's diaper is non-negotiable.

Real-World Performance Without Compromise

I was worried that all this non-toxic investment meant sacrificing performance—but HealthyBaby nailed it. Seriously. They feel thin but are still ultra-absorbent, soft and keeps my daughter dry ALL NIGHT—could these diapers get any better?!  While Healthybaby skips the wetness indicator (a feature of Hello Bello), it’s for thoughtful reasons—not convenience—they’re avoiding those extra (and unnecessary, if you ask me) dyes and chemicals. Thank you Healthybaby!

Certifications That Matter

Healthybaby racks up meaningful seals of trust:

  • EWG VERIFIED™ (highest health transparency, no questionable ingredients)

  • OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 (confirms materials are toxin-free)

  • Nordic Swan Ecolabel (strict environmental criteria)

  • FSC Certified (responsibly sourced wood pulp)

  • Plastic Neutral Certification (offsets plastic use)

  • Certified Organic Cotton Enhanced

  • Hello Bello offers plant-based core and chlorine-free claims, but doesn’t share this breadth of third-party verification, in fact, I haven't seen any other "non-toxic" diaper brand come close.

Why This Matters for Everyday Parenting

Here’s why this really hits home for me:

  • My baby is growing and staying safe—knowing every diaper that touches her is free from harmful chemicals makes nap time, playtime, and snuggle time feel safer.

  • Performing without toxic sacrifice—because I don’t compromise on absorbency or comfort, and Healthybaby delivers night and day.

  • The planet gets a little love too—Healthybaby’s carbon-neutral and plastic-offset approach fits our family’s sustainable values.

  • No guesswork—full transparency means I don’t have to wonder or worry about what’s hidden behind cute packaging.

Final Thoughts

When it comes down to it, Healthybaby diapers feel like a wholehearted, informed choice—built from the ground up for baby safety, environmental mindfulness, and real-life performance. They’re more than just non-toxic disposable diapers—they’re a promise that every diaper change is free from harmful chemicals, built with clean materials, and designed for a healthy future. That’s the kind of thoughtful parenting support I needed—and why Healthybaby earns my wholehearted recommendation over Hello Bello.
