Naturepedic Pillow Review: Best Non-Toxic Pillows Tested

Disclosure: These featured products were gifted to me at no cost in exchange for an honest review. As always, I share only my honest thoughts and experiences, from my home to yours.

If you're looking for the best non-toxic pillow, Naturepedic is one of the first brands I would consider. I've been testing two of their most popular pillows—the Organic Latex Side Sleeper Pillow and the Down Pillow with Organic Cotton Fabric—and I honestly love both.

But they feel very different to sleep on, and after using them side by side, I found myself reaching for each one for different reasons. So while I do have a favorite, the “best” pillow really comes down to what you're looking for in a pillow—and how you like to sleep.

In this Naturepedic pillow review, I'm sharing my honest experience with both pillows, including how they feel, who I think each one is best for, and which one I would choose if I had to pick just one.

I also appreciate that Naturepedic doesn't just make broad “non-toxic” claims. These pillows use high-quality materials and carry meaningful third-party certifications.

Quick Take: Naturepedic Pillows

After testing both Naturepedic pillows, I would absolutely recommend them — but I wouldn't recommend the same pillow to everyone.

If you're a side sleeper, like me, the Organic Latex Side Sleeper Pillow is my favorite. It gives me the support I want without feeling huge or overly firm, and the curved shape is designed specifically around the needs of side sleepers.

The Down Pillow is completely different. It's soft, fluffy, low-profile, and has that luxurious hotel-pillow feeling that makes you want to sink right into it.

Biggest limitations

  • These are premium-priced pillows

  • The side sleeper pillow is spot-clean only

  • The down pillow requires regular fluffing

  • Neither pillow will appeal to someone looking for a very firm pillow

My Naturepedic Pillow Review

I've become surprisingly particular about pillows over the years.

I used to be a stomach sleeper. Then I got pregnant with my first daughter, and somewhere along the way, I started sleeping on my side...naturally.

Four years later — and after a second pregnancy — I still can't comfortably sleep on my stomach.

I am officially a side sleeper.

That change made me realize how much the right pillow can matter.

I wanted something supportive enough to keep my neck comfortable but not so bulky that I felt like my head was propped up on a giant cushion. At the same time, I didn't want something so flimsy that my head sank straight through it.

That's exactly what I was looking for in the Naturepedic Organic Latex Side Sleeper Pillow.

And honestly, it checks every box for me.

The Naturepedic Organic Latex Side Sleeper Pillow

The first thing I noticed is that this pillow has a curved design intended to create more room for your shoulder while supporting your head and neck. It is also filled with shredded organic latex, and the fill can be adjusted by adding or removing material. Naturepedic includes an extra bag of shredded latex with the pillow, which I think is a really nice touch.

That adjustability is a big deal because there isn't one perfect pillow height for every side sleeper.

Your shoulder width, mattress firmness, body type, and personal preference all affect how much loft feels comfortable.

For me, the sweet spot is supportive without bulky.

I don't want my head pushed way up, but I also don't want my neck dropping toward the mattress.

This pillow gives me that middle ground.

What surprised me most

I think the biggest surprise was how supportive this pillow feels without feeling firm.

I've tried pillows marketed as supportive for side sleepers before, but I would literally wake up with sore ears from the pressure of the pillow. Am I the only one?!

That isn't what this feels like.

It has enough structure to support my head and neck, but it still feels comfortable and somewhat plush. It gives me the support I want without that stiff, overly-firm feeling I've experienced with other side sleeper pillows.

I also really like that the fill is adjustable, so you're not locked into one specific loft.

That's especially helpful for side sleepers because even a pillow that feels perfect in the store can feel completely different once you put it on your own mattress. Being able to add or remove fill gives you some room to fine-tune the height and support until it feels right.

My experience with the Naturepedic Down Pillow

The Down Pillow is almost the complete opposite experience.

While I primarily sleep on my side, there are times when my hips act up from an old pregnancy-related hip injury and I need to sleep on my back until things calm down.

This pillow has become my best friend for those nights.

It is so soft and plush that it genuinely gives me that luxury-hotel-pillow feeling.

It's fluffy and cloud-like without being stiff or overly structured.

And the part I especially appreciate when I'm sleeping on my back is the loft.

I don't want a pillow that's so thick that my chin gets pushed toward my chest. I want my head to settle into a neutral position.

The Naturepedic Down Pillow lets me do that.

It has a low-loft, compressible feel, so I can sink into it without feeling like my head is being pushed forward. Naturepedic describes it as a soft, low-loft pillow designed for back and stomach sleepers.

I actually started using it on my side sometimes, too—not because I think it's necessarily the ideal side-sleeper pillow, but because it is just so comfortable. I'll squish and bunch it up a little and tuck it between my shoulder and neck to create a bit more support.

It wasn't my primary side-sleeping pillow, though.

And then my husband stole it.

I'm only half joking.

I've been trying to find a non-toxic pillow that my husband actually likes for years because healthy materials in our bedroom are really important to me. We tried several different options, but he always found them to be uncomfortable. Eventually, we settled on an OEKO-TEX-certified memory foam pillow because it was the only one that didn't seem to disturb his sleep.

Or so we thought.

After he started using the Naturepedic Down Pillow, he actually asked me, "Where is this pillow from?"

He was obsessed.

And then he told me something that honestly surprised me: the neck pain he'd been dealing with for the last four years had mostly gone away since he started using it.

His takeaway was pretty simple: maybe he hadn't needed a firmer, more structured pillow after all. Maybe he had just been using the wrong type of pillow for the way he sleeps.

So after watching him go from being impossible to please about pillows to actively stealing mine, I was pretty convinced that the softer, lower-loft design was a much better fit for him as a back sleeper.

So now I don't really get to use it anymore.

Apparently, it's his pillow.

Naturepedic Pillow Materials and Certifications

One of the biggest reasons I wanted to try Naturepedic pillows in the first place is the materials.

I prioritize non-toxic choices in our bedroom because we spend so many hours there.

A pillow is something I'm literally breathing over for hours every night, so it's an area where I personally don't want to compromise on materials.

And this is where Naturepedic really stands out.

Organic cotton

Both pillows use GOTS-certified organic cotton fabric.

The Side Sleeper Pillow uses a GOTS-certified organic cotton fabric, while the Down Pillow uses GOTS-certified organic cotton designed to be down-proof.

GOTS — the Global Organic Textile Standard — is meaningful because it goes beyond simply saying that a fabric is “organic.” It addresses organic fiber content as well as processing and supply-chain requirements.

This is one of the certifications I look for when shopping for organic bedding.

Certified organic latex

The Side Sleeper Pillow uses GOLS-certified shredded organic latex.

GOLS stands for Global Organic Latex Standard and is specifically focused on organic latex and latex foam. Naturepedic says GOLS certification requires at least 95% certified organic raw material by total weight, along with requirements around processing, health, environmental practices, and traceability.

For someone specifically searching for natural pillows, this is a meaningful distinction.

You're not simply getting a pillow advertised as “natural latex.” You're getting a pillow made with certified organic latex.

MADE SAFE

Both pillows carry MADE SAFE certification.

MADE SAFE evaluates products against a restricted substance list covering more than 15,000 known or suspected harmful substances, including categories such as certain flame retardants, heavy metals, harmful VOCs, PFAS, and other substances of concern.

I don't think any certification should be treated as a magic guarantee that a product is “perfect.”

But when I'm shopping for a non-toxic product, I would much rather see independent screening than simply trust a brand's marketing language.

GREENGUARD Gold

The Side Sleeper Pillow is also listed as GREENGUARD Gold certified.

GREENGUARD Gold focuses on chemical emissions and indoor air quality, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

That matters to me because the bedroom is one of the places where I want to minimize unnecessary exposure to chemical emissions.

Responsible Down Standard

The Down Pillow uses RDS-certified 750 fill power U.S. duck down.

RDS, or Responsible Down Standard, is specifically relevant to the down itself rather than the organic status of the entire pillow. Naturepedic lists the Down Pillow as containing RDS-certified down and GOTS-certified organic cotton.

Not sure which certifications you can actually trust? I break down the non-toxic certifications that matter, the ones that don't, and what to look for when you're shopping.

Naturepedic Pillow Comparison

If you're trying to decide between the two pillows I tested, I'd think about it primarily in terms of sleep position and feel.

Organic Latex Side Sleeper Pillow Down Pillow
Best for Side sleepers Back and stomach sleepers
Feel Supportive, but soft Soft, fluffy, plush
Fill GOLS-certified shredded organic latex RDS-certified 750-fill-power duck down
Cover GOTS-certified organic cotton GOTS-certified organic cotton
Loft Adjustable Low and compressible
Support More structured Soft and flexible
My favorite use Side sleeping Back sleeping
Main consideration Spot clean only Needs regular fluffing

The biggest difference is simple:

If you sleep on your side and need a bit more support, go with side sleeper. If you want plush softness, go with down.

Are Naturepedic Pillows Worth It?

For me, yes.

But I don't think "worth it" means the same thing for everyone.

Naturepedic's pillows are definitely a premium option, so if you're simply looking for the most affordable non-toxic pillow you can find, this probably isn't where I'd start.

For me, though, the higher price feels more understandable when I consider the materials, certifications, construction, and, in the case of the Side Sleeper Pillow, the ability to adjust the fill to your preference.

There are certainly less expensive pillows that can be comfortable and may be a great fit for you. But if you're specifically looking for a non-toxic pillow made with organic materials and are comfortable spending a little more for those features, I think Naturepedic is worth considering.

After sleeping on both of these, I can understand why they cost more than the average pillow—and, for me, that's what makes the investment feel worthwhile.

Who Is the Naturepedic Side Sleeper Pillow Best For?

I would recommend the Side Sleeper Pillow to:

  • Dedicated side sleepers

  • Combination sleepers who spend most of the night on their side

  • People who want neck support without a giant, bulky pillow

  • People who prefer natural latex to synthetic foams

  • Shoppers looking for certified organic bedding

  • Anyone who wants adjustable fill

  • People who prioritize third-party certifications

For me, if I had to choose just one, this is the better of the two Naturepedic pillows I tested because I am a side sleeper.

It's the one I reach for because it solves the exact problem I was trying to solve: supportive without bulky while on my side and comfortable without flimsy.

Who Is the Down Pillow Best For?

I would choose the Down Pillow if you:

  • Primarily sleep on your back or stomach

  • Like soft pillows

  • Prefer a fluffy, plush feel

  • Like being able to squish and reshape your pillow

  • Don't want a firm pillow

  • Love that classic luxury-hotel pillow feeling

If you're someone who has tried pillow after pillow and still can't seem to find one that feels right, this is the pillow I'd consider. My husband had been searching for years, and after trying this one, I haven't been able to get it back from him.

How Naturepedic Compares to Other Non-Toxic Pillows

There are plenty of good non-toxic pillow options out there, and they can feel very different depending on the materials they're made with.

A buckwheat pillow, for example, can be wonderfully adjustable and has a much firmer, more structured feel. A solid latex pillow provides consistent support, while shredded latex gives you a little more flexibility to adjust the feel. Kapok tends to be softer and fluffier, while wool has a more stable, supportive feel.

That's one reason I liked having both of these Naturepedic pillows to test. The Organic Latex Side Sleeper Pillow gives you more structure and adjustability, while the Down Pillow is soft, fluffy, and much more compressible.

So I don't think Naturepedic is automatically the best choice for everyone. But if you're specifically looking for a pillow made with natural materials, organic options, and meaningful third-party certifications, I think it's a brand worth considering.

What About Pillow Certifications?

One thing I would encourage you to look at when shopping for non-toxic pillows is the certification rather than simply the word “non-toxic.”

“Non-toxic” isn't one universal certification.

Different third-party organizations evaluate different things.

GOTS is particularly relevant to organic textiles.

GOLS applies specifically to organic latex.

MADE SAFE takes a broader approach to screening ingredients and substances.

GREENGUARD Gold focuses heavily on chemical emissions and indoor air quality.

RDS applies specifically to responsibly sourced down.

That's why I like seeing several complementary certifications on a product.

It gives you more information than a single broad marketing claim.

Naturepedic explains that certifications vary by product depending on the materials and construction, which is why it's worth checking the individual product page rather than assuming every Naturepedic product carries the exact same certifications.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Naturepedic a good pillow brand?

Yes. Based on my experience with these two pillows, I think Naturepedic is a particularly good choice for shoppers who prioritize organic materials, non-toxic construction, and third-party certifications.

Is the Naturepedic Side Sleeper Pillow good for side sleepers?

Yes. This is the pillow I would choose specifically for side sleeping. The curved design, adjustable shredded latex fill, and supportive feel make it a particularly good option for people who want neck and shoulder support without an overly bulky pillow.

Is Naturepedic Down Pillow good for back sleepers?

Yes. This is my favorite of the two for back sleeping. It is soft, low-profile, and compressible, allowing me to settle into a comfortable neutral position without feeling like my head is being pushed too far forward.

My husband has also become a huge fan of this pillow, and he primarily sleeps on his back. After years of trying different pillows and never quite finding one that felt right, this is the first one he's been genuinely obsessed with. So if you're a back sleeper who prefers a softer, more compressible pillow, I'd definitely consider this one.

Are Naturepedic pillows non-toxic?

Naturepedic uses the term “nontoxic” in describing its product approach, and its pillows carry independent certifications related to organic materials, chemical emissions, and restricted substances. The Side Sleeper Pillow, for example, is listed with GOTS, GOLS, MADE SAFE, and GREENGUARD Gold certifications.

I prefer looking at those specific certifications and materials rather than treating “non-toxic” as a standalone certification.

Does the Naturepedic Side Sleeper Pillow use latex?

Yes. It is filled with GOLS-certified shredded organic latex and covered with GOTS-certified organic cotton.

Can you wash Naturepedic pillows?

The Side Sleeper Pillow should be spot cleaned rather than machine washed. The Down Pillow can be professionally laundered, and Naturepedic also provides specific instructions for washing it's outer cover at home.

Final Thoughts: Are Naturepedic Pillows Actually Worth It?

Absolutely.

The Naturepedic Organic Latex Side Sleeper Pillow is the one that really impressed me. After going from a stomach sleeper to a side sleeper following pregnancy, I've spent a lot of time trying to find that sweet spot between support and comfort without a pillow feeling too thick or firm.

This pillow finally feels like that middle ground.

The Down Pillow serves a completely different purpose, but I love it just as much for those nights when I need to sleep on my back. It's soft, fluffy, comfortable, and gives me that luxury-hotel feeling without being so lofty that my neck feels pushed forward.

And apparently, my husband agrees. After years of trying to find a pillow he actually liked, he has completely claimed the Down Pillow as his own. I haven't gotten it back since.

From a non-toxic bedding perspective, I also appreciate the transparency around materials and certifications. For my family, that's worth paying more for.

If you're a side sleeper looking for a supportive natural latex pillow, I'd start with the Organic Latex Side Sleeper Pillow.

If you're a back or stomach sleeper who wants something soft, plush, and wonderfully squishable, I'd choose the Down Pillow.

Either way, these are two pillows I would feel comfortable recommending to someone who wants to make their bedroom a little more intentional without sacrificing comfort.
